I’m having a hard time finding that grey area in between pushing myself toward gains but not too hard that I cause a flare. Any advice?

Couple of things you could do, first I would look at over all training frequency. For instance, are you training 4 or 5 days a week? If so, back it down to 3 or 4 and then run that for a few weeks and see how you feel. The other thing I would do is look at over all training volume, you might need to back off the volume a little in order to recover from each workout.
The important thing to remember here is that fatigue accumulates, and in order to get the most out of each workout, you'll need to be able to recover from last one.
